Do you know that face of yours that only the people closest to you know? That face that doesn’t have to pretend to be nice, or happy, or having a great day when you are not. That face that is grumpy at times. That has mood swings and is not all that stable, but is loved non-the-less. That you don’t show to people at work or in class or to your friends.

That face you show when you are doing theatre. Where you revealing your innermost soul. To people that you have only known for a week, a month, or maybe even a day. 

It is that space where you can really be who you are, because everybody knows that, through all the mistakes that you have, all the faults, all the acts, you are human. And it is ok to be human. You are loved because you are human. Because you are needed to be human to do the work that we are doing.

I came back to theatre 12 years ago. And coming back to it after taking a break for 7 years gave me the same feeling I had when I was a teenager. It felt like coming home.

Now, you can experience this feeling in community theatre, professional theatre, an acting workshop, and acting course, a performing arts program, in the end it all comes down to this. You get to experience what it feels to be human. To be alive. To be with people that love you for who you are.

Those that have joined my program can attest to this. Friendships that have formed in my classes are lasting. They are true.

It’s the most beautiful thing for me to experience. To see those friendships happen and develop in front of me. To be a part of it. To be the catalyst for it.

God knows I miss theatre.

Sometimes inspiration comes to you when you least expect it. In this case I got inspired from one of the most unlikely places.

People are sending me their profiles all the time, coming from all different kind of countries. Around 6 months ago a young American, Rafe Siebert, sent me his profile.

Rafe sent me pictures and his reel(s). And what I found interesting about it was that he sent me two reels. 1. Comedy Reel and 1 Dramatic Reel.

Now I have had an acting reel since 2012 and I have been updating it continuously. I am trying to update my reel at least once per year whenever I have new material. Pictures as well – new pictures at least 1 time per year is a must for every actor.

Anyways, I digress. 

I used to mix my reels, to show a variety of acting that I was able to do, but dividing it into these two categories actually made a lot of sense to me.

If you are looking for a comedy actor, you want to see the range of comedy that actor can play. And for dramatic roles you don’t want to be bothered with comedy bits in between.

This year, also due to covid, I have finally been able to update my reel(s).

I cannot stress this enough. As actor it is always important to create new material. It is in the nature of our job that we have to prove that we have what it takes – and that we are up to date and active.

In Thailand and looking for an acting gig? Here are the 5 biggest kinds of jobs you can get as an actor in Thailand.

1) International Movies

There are quite a number of international movies shooting in Thailand every year and if you get a chance to audition for it and get a part, go for it! For you as an actor, if you come from any Europen country or Asian country or African country or anywhere in the world, you have to reduce or train an accent.

2) Thai Dramas & Movies

While this may be an obvious statement, speaking Thai will definitely improve your chances of getting a role in Thai dramas or movies. If you speak Thai, it’s easier to communicate with the team and people on the set, and also for your part.

3) Voiceover

Voiceover work is big in Thailand. You can apply in big companies like Andovar, Echo and Voiceover Asia and they’ll take your voice sample, send it out to clients and select you accordingly. Voiceover jobs are available year-round.

4) Stunt Work

There’s a lot of stunt work going on not only in Thailand but from Thailand they may send you to India, Malaysia or China. So if you have some experience as a stuntman or you know martial arts; how to kick, how to fall, how to take a punch, all these factors go into place which helps you can get into stunt work. Stunt work is always available year-round as well.

5) TVCs

There are always some or the other TVCs shot in Thailand, but not necessarily only Thai TVCs. TVCs from all over the world are shot here because Thailand is such a great location. They are looking for all kinds of characters—whether you’re tall, short, fat, slim, doesn’t matter what color and all kinds of age groups. There’s always work available for TVCs if you’re looking for it.

This is a hard business and getting a high paying job is pretty difficult. So, anything you can do to support your income, this is a good way to get involved and create a network.

There are many different ways to find jobs in the field of acting for films and TVCs. Here are some ways on how to find acting jobs in Thailand:

1) Facebook groups

The best way, also the most common way is through Facebook groups. There are a lot of Facebook groups where people share and post new projects and jobs in Thailand. If you search ‘acting Thailand’ and ‘casting Thailand’ on Facebook, you’ll find job postings that you can reply to, email to, and send your profile to.

2) Line groups

Similar to Facebook, there are different Line groups where people share jobs and you can find jobs. Though the problem with Line groups is that you need to be invited to them. Once you’re invited, you can easily view the job postings and apply to whatever jobs appeal to your liking. Though in order to be invited to the groups, you will need friends and connections who will invite you.

3) Establish Connection

Another way is that you need to have connections, build a network to find acting jobs in Thailand. So maybe go on Facebook, find some gigs and some information and then make connections there. Ask people to add you to LIne groups and that way you can find more jobs.

4) My website

Now, this is definitely self-promotion, but a pretty useful one. My website actors-thailand.com has a list of different agencies that are active. I recommend sending your profile to all of the agencies because you never know who can get you the job.

5) Network

Like anywhere else, network and connection are pretty important, especially in the acting industry. The bigger your network is, the more likely you are the hear about projects. Keep in touch with these people, and add them on Facebook to keep up with them and the projects that may be in the talks.

Networking is an important tool for a lot of things. And this stands for actors as well. Here’s why it’s important to network as an actor:

1) Projects

If you have connections and a network of people, you are more likely to hear about projects that other people don’t. For example, the stunt world is pretty small. So unless you’re in it or you know people in it, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll hear about projects. So very important if you want to be a stuntman to be involved in groups, be up to date with, and stay in touch with people. It’s the same for other kinds of acting work in the film industry. Sometimes there are projects going on that are secret that you can only find out through friends that are working on such projects. And they will tell you about it.

2) Stay up-to-date

Stay up to date on what’s happening. There are always new projects coming and going and to stay up to date with these things, you need to have strong connections. You need to build a network. Keep in touch with people: get their information, their email, their contact. And every now and then, text them to check up on how they’re doing and ask if there are any new projects.

3) Share Information

To maintain a good connection, things shouldn’t only be one way where you’re at the receiving end of getting information. You should also share information. People are very appreciative when you do that. If you give something, you will get something in return and that’s how the industry works.

4) Strong Network

Networking is the best way to get your name out there and to show that you’re available for projects. If you stay out of touch with people, they’re likely to forget you. So if you need to be active and continuously work towards building networks and maintaining existing ones that so it’ll help you propel your career.

In Thailand, where there is no union and hardly any agents that will represent you or fight for you, it’s important to know your worth as an actor. Here are some pointers:

 

1) Minimum Wage

Think about what is the absolute minimum wage you want to work for. What is your minimum wage? Pick a number you’re comfortable to work with for one day on set and make that your minimum no matter what happens. Don’t go below that. This is one aspect of defining and knowing your worth as an actor.

2) Happy Rate

What is your happy rate? I call it the happy rate because it’s the rate you feel comfortable with. What’s the rate that makes you go on set and you really want to do your best? Think about your happy rate that’ll make you appreciate every minute you are on set. Everything you do, you do it happily and whatever they tell you to do, you just want to do it. Now that you have these two numbers, I want you to make your happy rate your minimum rate. Your happy rate is an indicator to know your worth as an actor.

And to do that, you need to invest in yourself. You need to invest time and maybe also money.

1. Work on student films

Working on student films is such a way to gain experience, get exposure, and get footage for your reel. Maybe you’ve done a few extra parts, featured extra, or done some supporting roles. But if you’re working on a student film, they’re desperate for actors. They need actors for their projects. Maybe you can get the main part or you can learn on set what it takes to get the main part because it’s very different from playing a featured extra or an extra.

2. Make your own projects

If you have time available, don’t waste your time sitting around and complaining that there’s are no jobs out there. Make your own project, write a script for yourself, and work with your friends. If you know some people who want to get into filmmaking, make a movie with them. Make short films. This is such a good way to build a reel and a good reputation. And to have something you can show is yours is a proud moment.

3. Join a theatre production

There’s a bank of community theatre out there that accept actors in their production. This is a great way to get experience as well as training because of the theatre productions that last several months. You get to know people and establish connections. It’s the first place I played when I came to Bangkok and the people I worked with back then are ones I’m still friends with. And we’re still in contact. They’ve been helping me out in business.

4. Workshops and acting classes

Join workshops and acting classes. When I first started out, I took so many workshops. There are free workshops out there, there are paid workshops out there and there’s so much to learn. Acting is a lifelong journey that you’re on. Be open, expand, don’t limit yourself. Learn new things. You have no idea where this journey is going to take you.

It all starts from knowing what you’re worth then upgrading yourself, investing in yourself, and getting better at what you’re doing. People will see your determination and they will appreciate it. It will benefit you. So don’t stop growing. Believe in yourself and know you’re worth it.
